How To Maximize Space in a Small Bathroom Remodel

The average cost of a bathroom remodel is anywhere between $10,000 to $50,000 or more. That is quite a range, but the exact cost depends on the scope and size of each project. There are a variety of things that can influence the cost of your small bathroom remodel, including local labor costs, the square footage of your bathroom, your home’s geographical location, and the materials you choose to use.

No matter how much you choose to spend on your remodel, you want to make sure you get the biggest bang for your buck. So here are a few ways to maximize space during your small bathroom remodel.

Ditch Your Bathtub During Your Small Bathroom Remodel

A bathtub takes up a lot of space, especially if you’re already dealing with a small bathroom. One of the best ways to maximize the room you have is to get rid of the bathtub and put in a modest shower. You’ll be amazed how much more space you have when a bulky bathtub is no longer in the picture.

Opt for Pocket Doors

Traditional hinged doors require a lot of room to swing inward or outward. If you don’t have room to spare, consider installing a pocket door in your bathroom. This type of door slides directly into the wall and ensures every inch of your bathroom space is available. This means you can scoot your countertop or vanity all the way to the wall that’s adjacent to your door without worrying about the door banging into anything when it’s opened.

Install a Wall-Mounted Toilet and or Vanity

Wall-mounted toilets are very popular for small bathroom remodel projects. They are not only trendy and stylish, but they attach directly to the wall, which decreases the visual clutter and maximizes your available space.

Having space under your vanity makes the floor space look larger. This can be a trade of between openness and storage.

Consider a Corner Sink

In some very small bathrooms, there isn’t room for a traditional sink. You can save a lot of room and make use of the oft-unused corners of your bathroom by installing a corner sink. These sinks are designed to be modest in size and take up minimal room. To maximize the use of the space beneath your sink, you may want to place a stylish basket for storage purposes.

Install a Large Mirror

If you want your small bathroom remodel to make the room seem larger, install a large mirror along one wall. Mirrors reflect the space and create the illusion of depth.  A single large mirror across one wall is the best way to make your bathroom look like it has more square footage than it really does. There are many great options for mirrors these days, and if done well, they can be the jewel of the bathroom!

Use Shelves and Cabinets for Storage

Shelves and cabinets are so much more than design pieces. They also add valuable storage space to your small bathroom remodel. It is important to have your shelving and cabinetry strategically designed to meet your storage needs without looking too bulky in the small space. A specialist can help you get the most out of your cabinets with space planning and cabinetry design for all types of bathrooms. The right layout is essential for your shelving and cabinetry needs.

Paint Color is Key

We can achieve the look of more space via the right paint colors, and where possible bringing in as much natural light. If natural light isn’t an option then we can add lighting in creative ways to achieve this effect.

Finding the right colors that are currently in style can make your bathroom appear larger and most importantly  inviting.

Organize Your Shower

If you keep shampoo, conditioner and soap stored outside of your shower, it’s time to make a change. Keeping these items stored in your shower is a great way to free up space in your bathroom. There are many attractive shower storage options, including corner units, wall-mountable dispensers and shower caddies but when we do construction we would always add niches in the appropriate size for your items. Yep, we have been known to measure our clients' containers to make sure they fit .If you’re a Costco shopper you’ll know why.

Install Glass Around Your Shower

Instead of completely enclosing your shower in with a wall, install glass around it. This will make your bathroom appear larger. Glass shower doors also reflect light, which can contribute to the brightness of the room and make it look more open.

Make the Floor Continuous

When you plan your small bathroom remodel, consider making your floor material continuous throughout. When you have different flooring in the shower and the main part of your bathroom, it can make your bathroom space look smaller. Having one type of flooring throughout your entire bathroom will have the opposite effect and will make the space seem larger. It’s also worth us  having a conversation with your General Contractor about the possibility of a curb-less shower, to keep that continuous look. The floating vanity mentioned above also helps with this.

Utilize Hooks

Many small bathrooms have plenty of underutilized wall space. You can make the most of empty wall space by installing hooks as part of your small bathroom remodel project. The nice thing about hooks is they are so versatile. You can use them to hang towels, robes, luffa sponges and more.  You can even install hooks on the insides of your cabinet doors so you can free up more space. Hang bulky items on the hooks (such as curling irons and hair dryers) to keep things organized.

Minimize Noise V’s Prints V’s Pattern

Busy patterns and colors are generally not seen in small bathrooms because they tend to overwhelm the space. Most will opt for serene, simple colors and patterns instead. This does help create a feeling of openness and comfort. Busy patterns, on the other hand, are likely to make the space seem cramped, but this too can be achieved with the simplicity of your other selections via the lines of your fixtures. However, large scale open prints can work wonders for a small space if it's drama you're looking for. It’s all how we tie it together and curate the overall space.
