Subway Tile - It’s Not Going Anywhere.

Stylish Subway Tile Backsplash Ideas

When you're looking to refresh your kitchen's design, a well-done subway tile backsplash can take the space up a notch. Finding the right backsplash to complement your kitchen can be challenging with so many subway tile styles and patterns to choose from. Here are our favorite ideas for stylish subway tile backsplashes.

Why a Subway Tile Backsplash?

Subway tile is timeless, classic, clean, and can be used in various ways to achieve the perfect aesthetic effects in your kitchen.

Expanding Spaces

Backsplashes are generally placed behind the stove and sometimes around the kitchen up to cabinet level. However, you can actually extend the subway tile backsplash to the ceiling and create a textured, attention-grabbing.

The colorways are endless.

Playing With Designs

Another fantastic way to do a subway tile backsplash is to change up the traditional pattern. We’ve all seen herringbone and chevron for example. They can still look spectacular, especially when paired with the correct architectural details.

You can also opt for adding patterns using colors. For example, light-colored tiles for two or three lines, a contrasting or darker shade for one line of tiles, and then back to light-colored tiles. Creating stripes! Two of my favorite local hand made vendors are Fireclay Tile and Sonoma TileMakers.

Adding a Personal Pop

If you're looking for something more personalized or fun, we recommend colored tiles. You can pull off almost any color you like with neutral or wood-colored cabinets, from subtle pinks and blues to vibrant yellows and greens. This creates a unique space that guests and friends won't forget.

Another way to play with color is to use dark grout with lighter tiles. Usually, grout is found in grays, browns, greens, black and white. Choose the one that contrasts with the tiles or matches other kitchen elements.

Keeping It Casual

When you want a cozy, personable feel, dark blue is a great color to create such an atmosphere. Match your dark blue cabinets and dark blue tiles with lightly colored countertops and shelving. Wood looks especially beautiful with this combo and adds to the friendly, rustic feel.

Using Dramatic Elements

Metals and metallic elements are an increasingly popular choice in kitchen design trends. Metals are perfect for creating contrasts and eye-catching subway tile backsplashes, especially in kitchens with black cabinets. Copper, for example, is subtle but shiny and can light up a space instantly.
